General Comments: So I've been breaking in my new sketchbook lately. I got a replacement for my last "new" one that has much much much better paper in it.
Anyway, my long-time watchers will recognize this character, Zanguaro.
Zang is a character I developed a good handfull of years ago. I originally created him back sometime in 2006, but didn't introduce him to Deviantart until the end of may, 2009.
In fact, the last thing I used him for was a plush back in 2010. So he's an older character of mine that I really need to give more love to.
I am in the process of re-designing him for a new story evil-girl-genius and I are trying to get started. BUT, I still quite love his old design, especially in this approach I took with my style. So I may make his old version an alternate version to his new self (since I quite like this guy the way he is). There may not be too many large differences between how I normally draw and this one, but if you could see some side-by-sides this one is a lot better than I've been doing over the last year. I've been more so influenced by Manga and Anime over the last week and have been encouraged to push more in that direction with some things. As you can see, this isn't 100% accurate to manga stylings, it just has hints of it that I've bolded out more. From the very beginning I've tried to fight doing this..but in doing so I lost a lot of my core influences, inspirations, ect. I've never been a Manga/Anime person, but I could learn from it. That's what I intend to do. Time to step past Disney and other western inspirations for a bit and see what happens.
This year is a year of experimentation for me. Hope everything works out lol.
About the Character: Zanguaro was originally developed for a story project between myself and my cousin called "Blizzard State".
At that time, about..9 years ago, he was a Soul Reaper who functioned much like a cross between the Grim Reaper and the Egyptian Heart Eater Ammit. He would ferry souls to the underworld after he'd judge them. To permanently extinguish someone's soul, he'd devour it. He wasn't from the mortal realm, but a realm of death. He was cast from there to gather more souls and pass judgement on mortals who caused the most damage or harm to their world and those around them. If a soul was good, he's send it to the afterlife, if it were evil he'd either judge whether or not they go into the afterlife or to simply end their existence based on how evil they were. He eventually got too comfortable in the mortal world (thanks to curiosity and befriending a nice young lady and her allies) and viewed his job as an annoyance more so than anything else and never wanted to return home. This however, posed a problem as he served as a gateway to the death realm as well. In his chest, locked by a strong enchanted lock, is a vortex to the death realm. If any powerful mortal were to discover a way to take it, they could easily tear it open and kill the soul reaper in the process. Or..they could just steal his energy and leave him in a death like state without actually killing him. To prevent the possibility of this happening, Zang carries a book that allows him to read the souls of mortals and whether or not they're on a path of good or evil and whether or not he'd have to worry about them. As additional defense he not only has acid for blood, saliva, ect, which he can use, but also carries a bone scythe in typical grim reaper fashion. When angry, he's not exactly someone to be messing with. He also can summon a spirit guardian out of his chest portal for additional help or protection from threats. Overall he's a neutral character but can lean more towards doing the right thing for his allies and severely punishing his enemies.
His new version is being fitted into a medieval world, but his old version may get it's own story.
